Nea Filadelphia Transfers
Nea Filadelphia is the seat of the Municipality of Philadelphia-Chalcedon, which is located in the central Athens area of Attica. The area until September 1927 was called Podondiftis, from the homonymous stream flowing through it. At that time, there were settled there refugees from Asia Minor refugees from Ampelokipi after a great fire that destroyed the huts they were staying. They were given new apartments in a settlement built there. The construction of the settlement began in 1923 on the basis of an English town plan and was completed in three years. The houses were tiled and small garden each. In the early years there was no stream, water, schools, roads, squares, or transport. The settlement was built by the Ministry of Social Welfare on expropriated land belonging to the Holy Sepulcher called Donorades. Until the settlement of the refugees, the area was green with vineyards and olive groves, many small farmhouses and a small village with 120 inhabitants in 1920. In the Red Mill there were many mills fed by Kifissos.New Philadelphia was named in 1932, in memory of the Philadelphia of Asia Minor. It has an area of 2 sq. Km. and an average altitude of 110 meters. In 1931 Nea Filadelfia connected to Athens with a bus service, and after a few years the rail link of the area with the center of Athens and Piraeus operated via the railway line Lavrion - Agioi Anargyroi. In the future, there is a metro station in Patriarch Square for lines 4 and 5. It is considered a nice suburb, as it has plenty of green, to which the parks of the area and the Alps contribute. After the earthquake of 1999, there was much residential development. The refugee settlement of New Philadelphia has been characterized as a traditional settlement.
