Astakos is a coastal town (10m high) of the prefecture of Aitoloakarnania, built in the bay of the homonymous bay and at the foot of Mount Veloucha, which is the end of the Acarnanian Mountains. It is the headquarters of the Municipality of Xiromerou, and was the seat of Astakos Municipality. Among its attractions are monasteries and historic sites, such as the Byzantine castle of Dragamaestos and the archaeological site of ancient Astakos where the ruins of a temple dedicated to Jupiter Karao are preserved. It is 56 km NW from the capital of Messolongi prefecture and 51 km D from Agrinio, the largest urban center in the wider region. In the prehistoric period, settlements around the bay of Astakos in Agios Panteleimonas, Graves (where later developed the classic Astakos), in the Loutsena area on the outskirts of Mount Dikorfo and in Agios Nikolaos at the west opening of the bay are testified. The most important settlement, however, was found in Platygalios bay. It is an early Helladic settlement (of the IIrd II century around 2600 BC) with significant architectural and ceramic finds, which came to light in the mid-1980s when the bay was formed by artificial means to settle there initially the ship scavenger and later the current port. Remnants of walls and a number of shells were found in this location.
