Komotini is the capital of Thrace, is located in the northeastern part of Greece, in the county of Rodopi. It is the seat of the administrative region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and the capital of the Regional Unity of Rodopi. Also in Komotini is the Democritus University of Thrace. With its existence being assured by the late antiquity, the former Byzantine fortress of the Komotini or Koumoutzinas became a major urban center in the Late Byzantine period. Its prominent position in the Thrace region was established during the Ottoman period (1363-1912), in the last period of which (19th century) it became the administrative center of the wider region. Its temporary conquest by the Bulgarians in the First Balkan War, its liberation during the Second Balkan War and the outcome of the First World War led to the successive occupation of the city from Bulgaria and Greece until its final integration into the Greek territory in 1920. In the post-war years, the city developed thanks to its central geographical position and its importance as an administrative center, maintaining its character with the resulting problems of integration of minority groups.
