Pyrgos is a town in the northwest Peloponnese, the capital of the Prefecture of Ilia and the seat of the Municipality of Pyrgos. During the 2011 census there were 24,359 inhabitants. The city of Pyrgos is 309 km from Athens via Patras, 293 km. through Tripoli, 20 km from Ancient Olympia and 13 km from Katakolos, which is its port. It is the administrative and commercial center of the wider region and the seat of the Municipality of Pyrgos, with the total population of the Municipality according to the census of 2011 amounting to 47.995 inhabitants. Previously it was the seat of the name "Kapodistriakou" of the Municipality. Mayor of the Municipality of Pyrgos is today Gavrilis Liatsis. From a historical point of view, the Tower first appeared in the 17th century and its founder is George Tsernitas. During the Revolution of 1821 the Tower played a major role due to the contribution of its inhabitants to the national struggle, during which it was the first Greek city destroyed by the Turks. He became particularly interested in the raisin period (19th century - 1930) due to his geographical position.
