Melisia is a municipal community and seat of the Municipality of Penteli, which is also composed of Penteli and Nea Penteli. During antiquity Melisia was a rural area that fell within the administrative boundaries of the ancient city of Athmoni. The area of the area was used for farming, livestock, but also by beekeepers. During the Roman and Byzantine years the area belonged to the Holy Monastery of Penteli, while during the Ottoman rule it served as a hiding place with its caves at the foot of the Pentelic for the inhabitants of Maroussi.
