Pylos Historically known as the Venetian-Italian name Navarino, it is a seaside town, which is administratively governed by the Municipality of Pylos - Nestoros and is located to the west of the Prefecture of Messinia, and by 2010 it was the seat of the municipality of the same name. It is known for its ancient, medieval and modern history. It should be noted, however, that the first and oldest town of Pylos, Ancient Pylos, does not coincide geographically with the present town, although the second one constitutes both the honorary and the substantial residential continuity of the former. Also, as far as ancient Pylos is concerned, it is, in part, identical with various archaeological remains of palaces and other administrative and residential infrastructure in various other archaeological sites in the wider region of Pylia, but remains virtually unsecured, as a whole, according to the oldest and modern research specialists. A characteristic reference point of the Minoan period of the ancient city is the Palace of Nestor, as well as other palaces, such as those that have been excavated and excavated in nearby Iklena. Pylos is today the seat of the Municipality of Pylos - Nestoros, which is part of the Regional Unity of Messenia, which was established in 2011 with the Kallikratis Program.
