The Regional Unity of Piraeus consists of the municipality of the same name and four municipalities (Nikaia-Agios Ioannis Renti, Korydalos, Keratsini-Drapetsona and Perama). It occupies the southwestern part of the Capital Region and is the third largest city in Greece. The center of Piraeus is about 10 km from the center of Athens, which is a historic port. Piraeus is a major industrial and commercial center in the modern era, while it has the largest (in passenger) port of Europe, connecting the capital with the Aegean islands and being an important destination for cruise ships in the Mediterranean. Piraeus, according to Strabo and modern geological studies, was once an island, which was associated with Attica after the deposits of Kifissos and other streams of the area.
