Nea Ionia can be said to have been founded on Sunday, June 27, 1923, when Nikolaos Plastiras inaugurated the area of "Podarades" in the neighborhood for the refugees from Sparta of Pisidia who had come to Greece after the Asia Minor Catastrophe of 1922 and exchange of populations in 1923 [1]. The settlement was originally named Nea Pisidia, but the name did not prevail, as refugees from the cities of Inepolis, Castastonia, Safarboli, Naples, Cappadocia, Alaya and Antalya of Pamphylia, and also from Smyrna and its surroundings, Vourla, Aivali, Thyateira and other states of Ionia where great Greek Orthodox communities flourished. So he got the name "Nea Ionia".
