Nea Makri Transfers
Nea Makri is a city of northeastern Attica. It belongs administratively to the Municipality of Marathon. Nea Makri borders north with Marathon, south with Rafina, westward with the Pentelian mountain range, while it lies to the east of South Evia on a coastline of about 10 km. The city center is 32 km away from Athens via Mesogeion Avenue and Marathon. From "Eleftherios Venizelos" Airport is 12 km away via Marathonos Avenue and Attiki Odos. Accesses are still from Palaia Penteli via Penteli Avenue and from Kifissia and Ekali via Dionysos Avenue. It was founded in 1924 by Antonios Tzizi, when its first inhabitants, refugees from the coasts of Lycia, Asia Minor, arrived from the Ionian towns of Makris and Levisis.  The refugees settled in Xylokeriza Attica in 1923 in the area known today as Agia Marina, the first step was the expropriation of the marshland from the plots that until then were the property of the Penteli Monastery, the work of the revolutionary government of N. Plastiras. The refugees found some families of Sarakatsian breeders in the Xilokeriza and East regions as well as another 7 families of refugees who arrived from Smyrna in the first persecution of Christians in 1913, according to a census of 1920, the total number of Xilokeriza residents at that time was 90. The refugees they immediately gained excellent relations with the Sarakatsans who helped them in the construction of the new city, but relations with the inhabitants of the neighboring settlement of Marathon were for many decades very hostile. The final distribution of estates was completed in 1931 and the estates were given by lot to 86 families of Makrolians, 6 Families of Smyrni and a few landowners, in 1948 became the last distribution to troops of the Greek-Albanian war and landless.
