Penteli is a municipal community of the Municipality of Penteli, which also consists of Nea Penteli and Melissia, where the seat is located. The agro-livestock settlement that grows in the area in the coming years is known as "Koufos", attracting Sarakatsan shepherds and marathon farmers. In the later years, the wider area attracts brokers coming from all over Greece to take advantage of the famous marble of the mountain. In the 7th century BC the mountain of Attica, located to the northeast of Athens, is called "Vrilissos" (which means "Strong Stone" by the synthetic briolaos: I have power + lamas: stone + suffix). By this name we find the term in texts of Herodotus and Thucydides. There is a confusion of the name of this term with a river of antiquity presented in some texts with the same name. Some confuse this river with the great ravine that comes from today's New Penteli, passes through Vrilissia and Melissia and is poured into the municipality of Chalandri. 3rd century BC the mountain is called Penteli from the municipality that is set up on the hill in front of the mountain (Ancient Municipality of Penteli), where the present square of the Holy Trinity is located.
