Ptolemais formerly Kailarias, is a city in northern Greece, in the Administrative District of Western Macedonia, it belongs to the prefecture of Kozani and is the capital of the province of Eordea. It is about 28 kilometers from Kozani, the capital of the prefecture, and is the second largest city in the prefecture and the region of Western Macedonia. It is the seat of the Municipality of Eordea. Since the 1960s, the GR-3 / E65 highway has bypassed the city in the east. It is characterized as an energy center of Greece due to the thermoelectric power stations that exploit the lignite of the area for energy production. The name change was made in the context of the restoration of the Ancient Macedonian historical heritage of the area, after the incorporation of the region into the Greek state. So, as it was widespread in the wider area of Western Macedonia, many villages and towns were named after generals Alexander.
